An Open Letter To Mr Fred Durst & Limp Bizkit on why bands fail

Dear Mr Fred Durst & fellow members of the band Limp Bizkit

After listening to your new single appropriately titled ‘Why Try?’, I feel I must point out a few reasons why your comeback will fail and how times have changed since you last decided to “make music”.

I point you to one Mr Chino Moreno & his band the Deftones…you may have heard of them.

Similar to your band, the Deftones were big in the 1990’s Nu-metal scene.

Unlike your band however they have successfully managed to resurface themselves and be relevant in 2010 and here is how:

1. Design & Branding

They hired designers to make a professionally designed album cover and logo to represent their new sound. They then set up a well designed, consistently branded and neatly organised Website, Myspace Profile and YouTube channel like so:

http://www.deftones.com

http://www.myspace.com/deftones

They did not not get their 15 year old cousin, who knows how to open Photoshop, to make you a horrible meshing of stock fonts and drop shadows for your logo/website and then make a mess of a myspace profile that looks nothing like your website:

2. Music & Sound

The Deftones then mixed their trademark sound with something more mature, edgy, technical and relevant to 2010 like so:

They did not use recycled riffs, high pitched whiny annoying vocals, cringe worthy childlike lyrics, 50000 horrible guitar effects, stupid samples, and structure it to sound like one big horrible 3 minute verse:

3. Artistic Integrity & Passion

The Deftones displayed their artistic integrity and passion through a series of blogs and video interviews explaining their writing and recording process like so:

They did not make a half assed attempt at communicating with their fans like you did:

4. Social Media, Networking & Fans

The Deftones then went out of their way to use new Social Media technology such as Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, UStream, and Blogs to communicate and connect with their fans

Your band doesn’t have a YouTube channel, doesn’t have any tweets on Twitter, has a blank and boring Facebook channel….and I could go on.

As you can see…the times have changed and the world isn’t like it was in 1990.

I hope this helps you with any future comeback attempts you may have planned for the world to suffer through.
